Psalm 91 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High
Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress;
My God, in Him I will trust.”
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler[a]
And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers,
And under His wings you shall take refuge;
His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night,
Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness,
Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
In the wake of what recently occurred in Manchester England, I think it’s important that we talk about terror. Terror is extreme fear, and those who would use terror against others are known as terrorists, this is something we all know, but few of us know how to respond in terrifying situations.
There is an old saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Scripture is clear, God does not want you to be afraid, of anything, or anyone for that matter, but rather than seek a cure for terror and fear, wouldn’t it be better if God gave us a preventative measure?
Thankfully He does. The Bible says in Ps 91 that the prevention to terror is to dwell in the secret place and therefore under the shadow of the Almighty. In other words God’s presence (aka perfect love) removes all fear from our life. Now this is a process, but as we live each day in the presence of God and His love fear is overcome.
When I was in the 4th grade there were two 6th graders that bullied me daily. I walked to school oftentimes fearful that I would have to face these two miniature terrorists. One day as a young man I was praying, and the Lord spoke to my heart and brought up that season of my life. He said to me “What if your Dad had been with you, walking you to school everyday?” Now my Dad is not a big man, but he certainly towers over 6th grade ruffians, and I know he would have struck enough fear in their hearts to keep them at bay.
God was giving me an example of Ps 91, when we are in God’s presence, there is no need to fear. The Lion of Judah will strike fear in the heart of even the most terrifying of enemies.
So as we are reminded that terror is alive and well in our time, lets remember that God’s presence is our protection, and we can find refuge und His wings. It is my prayer that all of America returns to God again, that as a nation we can know this wonderful protective power.
Father you protect me, my spouse, and my children each and every day. I thank you for your ever-presence, and for removing fear from my life. Let us walk every day in the boldness that comes from knowing we are protected by the unmatched power of the Almighty! In Jesus Name ~Amen
